Krakatoa 1883 : Three Weirdness in the Krakatoa Movie, Number 2 are Very Surprising. (written by Nitania Rianti)

Krakatoa 1883 is produced by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) directed by Sam Miller and this film was released in 2006 with the title "Krakatoa the Last Day"  the film is played by Rupert Penry-Jones as Willem Beijerinck, Olivia Williams as Johanna Beijerinck, Kevin McMonagle as Rogier Verbeek, Ramon Tikaram as Tokaya, William Miller as Pieter Beijerinck, Janine Wood as Catharina Schuit, Bill Flynn as Gerrit Schuit, Darrell D'Silva as Captain Lindeman. This film is based on Roger's notes he was a geologist who witnessed the eruption of Krakatoa. Indonesia has 100 active mountains, one of them is Krakatau. Krakatau Mountain is located in the middle of the Sunda Strait which is 30 miles from the mainland. Krakatau has 3 active craters. The earthquake began in May 1883 around Krakatoa, but residents did not want to know about the incident, nor did scientists. On May 20, the first time the krakatau released smoke. In the film, on May 27, the activity of Krakatoa also increased. Throughout May to June, Krakatoa with 3 craters continues to emit blue and green smoke if exposed to sunlight. Even strange signs often occur, namely monkeys and birds are not in the trees and chickens no longer lay eggs. On August 26, 1883 at 1:00 p.m. when the opening ceremony of the market there Krakatoa first erupted. More than 1 million cubic meters of ash and pumice per second were spewed out of the mountain. Large landslides that affect sea water so that tides occur. Less than an hour of 30 miles of ashes covered all directions. At 2:30 p.m., the sea water receded and suddenly a tsunami took place to the north which beat settlements around the coast. At night there was ash rain and gas and ash mixed with electricity.
This film is a true story that has occurred in 1883 in Indonesia, the mountain produced the most violent eruption in history, destroying the house and killing 36 thousand people, even the sound of the explosion until it was heard as far as 3000 miles to Australia. Maybe some of us have not been born on this earth in 1883, when we were born, we did not know and did not feel the great tragedy that had befallen Indonesia, everything became history for us. Through this film, we know how the incident in 1883 left many of the griefs, tears, blood, and fear of the people in the incident. The film is played by Kevin McMonagle, a Dutch Geologist, and Rupert Penry-Jones as Willem Beijerinck and Olivia Williams as Johanna Beijerinck. In this story there is a family that has 3 children and there is a scientist who studies the Krakatoa mountain region.
seen from the results of the film directed by Sam Miller, the player who played the role of the film played a very professional role, the editor was so cool that it could produce a village atmosphere like in 1883, the people there played the scene well, and the houses there were designed like in the past, and even more amazing when the volcanic eruption and sunami happened as real and the audience who saw the film felt like what had happened in 1883. but it is unfortunate that the location of this film is not in Indonesia but on the South African coast and Madagascar, with the appearance of Mount Krakatau just as a stock footage. Whereas the extras of the indigenous population are not known to be native to Indonesia or not, but there is also research that states that the population of Madagascar also has genes of Javanese descent. Here are the screenshots from the Krakatoa movie:

From the quality of the player, editor, character, storyline, there seems to be nothing to criticize, because everything are good. Unfortunately there are some dialogues or tragedies in the film that feel strange. For example, as shown below :

1.      1. Conversations in Malay look stiff, when viewed from the face, the player looks like an Indonesian, but why using the language is very stiff. It turned out that after I found out; the location of the filming was not in Indonesia, but in the coastal areas of South Africa and Madagascar, with the image of Mount Krakatau only as stock footage. While extras players from the indigenous population are not known whether they are native to Indonesia or not, but there is also research that says that the inhabitants of Madagascar also have genes of Javanese descent.
Examples of conversations are:
 “jaga anak-anakku baik-baik”
“pergi ke bukit, aku akan tunggu bila kau boleh”
“Bagaimana kamu, hendak mencari kita nanti”
“aku akan cari kamu semua, sekarang pergi”
“aku tak boleh, meninggalkan kamu”

1.      2. In this scene that is very surprising is when a large ship survived the tsunami, in the film, the sea water or tsunami is very high, and the waves are very large also mixed with the ash rain. But this ship survived with all of its passengers. If this happens in real life, this ship will be destroyed and sink.

1.      3. In the film it is said that the tsunami was 40 meters high, but in this scene when the tsunami hit and destroyed the house, why did the water immediately recede. even though the colonial wife's house was only 2 floors. If this happens in real life, may be her house should have sunk and been destroyed like any other house.

So to sum up, In spite of the shortcomings of the film, this film has presented a flash of colonial life with an attractive visual appearance that has become an impressive educational film and should be interpreted. And through this film we know what happened to krakatoa in 1883 which is now possible for many millennia children who don't know about this history.
